- The French road network, outside of the motorway system of autoroutes, is composed of routes départementales and routes nationales.
The route départementale is a secondary road, maintained by the département and signalled as ‘D’ followed by a road number and marked in yellow on French road maps. It is not intended to be used for fast travel between towns and can have stretches indicated in green on maps to mark panoramic views or local beauty spots.
The routes nationales form part of the state-maintained road network, signalled as ‘N’ followed by the road number and marked in red on French road maps. The routes nationales provide faster roads for travel between towns and cities. → Bison Futé

and is sometimes used between two verbs in English to mean ‘in order to’ (wait and see, go and ask, try and rest etc.). To translate these expressions, look under the appropriate verb entry (wait, go, try etc).
