Nel Regno Unito il termine college può riferirsi a un College of Further Education o a un College of Higher Education. Il primo è un istituto scolastico per la formazione permanente, per studenti dai 16 anni in avanti, che fornisce corsi per l'ottenimento di A-levels, GNVQ (General National Vocational Qualification) o altri tipi di diplomi. Il College of Higher Education, invece, è un istituto universitario, come i famosi colleges di Oxford e Cambridge, che rappresentano le più antiche università britanniche.
