I. than [βρετ ðan, ð(ə)n, αμερικ ðæn, ðən] ΠΡΌΘ When than is used as a preposition in expressions of comparison, it is translated by di or che (non): he's taller than me = è più alto di me; Glasgow is bigger than Oxford = Glasgow è più grande di Oxford; your car is less expensive than mine = la tua auto è meno cara della mia; I was more surprised than annoyed = ero più sorpreso che irritato. - For expressions with numbers, temperatures etc., see this entry. See also the entries hardly, less, more, other, rather, soon. - When than is used as a conjunction, it is translated by di quanto and the verb following it is preceded by non: it was farther than I thought = era più lontano di quanto non pensassi. However, Italian speakers often try to phrase the comparison differently: it was more difficult than we expected = è stato più difficile del previsto. For more uses and their translations, see this entry - See also the entries hardly, rather, soon.
