Nel Regno Unito il termine college può riferirsi a un College of Further Education o a un College of Higher Education. Il primo è un istituto scolastico per la formazione permanente, per studenti dai 16 anni in avanti, che fornisce corsi per l'ottenimento di A-levels, GNVQ (General National Vocational Qualification) o altri tipi di diplomi. Il College of Higher Education, invece, è un istituto universitario, come i famosi colleges di Oxford e Cambridge, che rappresentano le più antiche università britanniche. Questi sono istituti semi-indipendenti, con propri corpi docenti (fellows) e un sistema di insegnamento diverso rispetto alle altre università. Ciascun college ha i propri edifici, comprendenti una hall (refettorio), una biblioteca, una cappella e stanze per gli studenti. Sono molto prestigiosi e costosi, quindi generalmente frequentati da studenti di ceto sociale elevato, spesso provenienti dalle public schools. Negli Stati Uniti il termine college fa riferimento a diversi istituti universitari che forniscono corsi di due anni (community college, junior college) o quattro anni (four-year college, university), al termine dei quali si ottiene rispettivamente un associate's degree o un bachelor's degree. Per essere ammessi, gli studenti provenienti dalla high school devono sostenere un esame, il SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) o l'ACT (American College Test).
