- Acqua alta
- This is the exceptionally high tide which the Venetian lagoon is sometimes subject to during the winter months. It is caused by particular wind conditions but exacerbated by man's impact on the environment. When the water level in the lagoon rises by about a metre or more, up to an extreme of more than 1.40 m, ever-increasing areas of Venice's streets and squares are covered by several centimetres of water. The high water is usually heralded by the sounding of sirens three or four hours before the tide reaches its highest point, and duckboards are put out in the busiest areas to enable pedestrians to get through.

- This is the Northern part of the Trentino-Alto Adige region, made up of the province of Bolzano, which passed to Italy after World War I. In German it is called the Südtirol. Most of the population are of German ethnicity and speak German. Since 1948 it has enjoyed a special autonomy, which was further strengthened in 1972: place names are given in German and Italian and civil servants have to pass a bilingual examination. School lessons are held exclusively in German for those of German extraction, and in Italian for those of Italian extraction. This ethnic separation for education should change in the future, giving way to true bilingualism.
