- Also known as the Venice festival, this is the film section of the Biennale. It was started in the 1930s and takes place every year at the end of August at the Palazzo del Cinema on the Venice Lido. One of the largest film festivals in Europe (and indeed the world), it attracts films, actors, directors, and other technicians from around the world and the festival winners are awarded the Leone d'oro (Golden Lion).

- The Venice Biennale is an international festival of modern art. Since 1895 it has taken place every two years in the Giardini public park in Venice. The Biennale Committee also organizes the international Film Festival. Held annually in September it is the second biggest film festival in Europe after Cannes.

- The first coffee house in Europe opened in Venice in 1647. Since that time the drinking of coffee (caffè) has spread throughout Italy. Italians enjoy drinking several different varieties of coffee: espresso (small, strong black coffee), cappuccino (coffee with frothy milk), caffellatte (coffee with a lot of milk), caffè macchiato (espresso with a drop of hot milk), latte macchiato (hot milk with a drop of coffee), caffè corretto (black coffee with alcohol in it), and so on.

- The Accademia della Crusca (Crusca Academy - crusca means "bran") was founded in Florence in 1583 with the aim of compiling a dictionary of pure Italian. Various editions of the Crusca Dictionary were published over the centuries, the first being printed in Venice in 1612. These dictionaries have helped to set the standard for written Italian.
