- The Accademia della Crusca (Crusca Academy - crusca means "bran") was founded in Florence in 1583 with the aim of compiling a dictionary of pure Italian. Various editions of the Crusca Dictionary were published over the centuries, the first being printed in Venice in 1612. These dictionaries have helped to set the standard for written Italian.
- Italian universities (università), are divided into a number of different faculties (facoltà). The course of study ends with the award of the laurea . The first European university was the scuola salernitana , the medical school founded in Salerno in the 11th century. The universities of Bologna, Padua and, Naples are almost equally ancient.
