- Also known as the Venice festival, this is the film section of the Biennale. It was started in the 1930s and takes place every year at the end of August at the Palazzo del Cinema on the Venice Lido. One of the largest film festivals in Europe (and indeed the world), it attracts films, actors, directors, and other technicians from around the world and the festival winners are awarded the Leone d'oro (Golden Lion).

- This is the award traditionally given in Italy to those who complete a course of study at university, for four years in most faculties. In the last few years the situation has changed with the introduction of the laurea triennale or breve (the three-year or short degree), which comes at the end of a three-year course and leads to immediate job opportunities, as distinct from the laurea specialistica (specialist degree), which involves a further two years of study and is the only one to lead to the title of dottore.
