- There are various types of trains in Italy. Local train services are provided either by Locali , which stop at almost every station, Interregionali , which link places in different regions, often tourist centers - these may run only on weekends or at certain times of the year - or Diretti , which travel both within and between regions and are generally faster than Locali . Express trains can be either Intercity , linking almost all Italian cities, or Eurostar , which serve only the most important cities. Travel on both these types of trains is subject to payment of a supplemental fare.
- In formal situations, a man should be addressed as 'signor' plus the surname; for a woman use 'signora', or 'signorina' if she is very young; both of these can be used without the surname. Italians regard professional titles as very important and these are often used instead of 'signor' or 'signora.' It is therefore usual to refer to a lawyer, for example, as 'l'avvocato Rossi.' The titles dottore / dottoressa are widely used as titles for anyone who has a university degree. Other common titles are professore / professoressa for teachers, ragioniere / ragioniera, architetto and ingegnere.
- Italian television consists of three public channels (RAIUNO, RAIDUE, RAITRE) and numerous private channels, most of them local or regional. The three most important private channels (Canale5, Italia1, Rete4) broadcast nationwide and belong to Mediaset, which is controlled by Silvio Berlusconi. RAI, as a state-owned company, is run by the Communications Minister .
- Celebrating New Year's Eve with your family means either il veglione or il cenone. The veglione (literally staying up late) involves waiting for the arrival of the new year at midnight, passing the time with a New Year's Eve party or eating a large rich dinner (cenone) with friends or relatives. A typical dish for the Christmas period and New Year's Eve dinners is cappone (capon). Another is zampone e lenticchie , stuffed pig's trotter with lentils. The latter are considered important, because they will bring luck and money in the new year.
