- C'est ainsi que les Britanniques ont surnommé la commémoration de l'Armistice de 1918 (aussi appelée Remembrance Sunday ou Armistice Day). Ce dimanche-là, de nombreuses personnes portent à la boutonnière des coquelicots en papier ou en plastique, vendus par les associations caritatives au profit des mutilés de guerre. Ils évoquent ainsi les fleurs des champs de France ou de Belgique où reposent les morts de la première guerre mondiale.

- Le Remembrance Day, "Remembrance Sunday" ou "Poppy Day" est le deuxième dimanche de novembre (en souvenir de l'armistice du 11 novembre 1918), jour au cours duquel tous les soldats tombés pendant les deux guerres mondiales sont honorés par un service religieux et une cérémonie. Les gens portent partout un coquelicot rouge en tissu, symbole des champs de bataille de Flandre qui étaient fleuris de coquelicots après la Première Guerre mondiale. A 11 heures, on observe ce jour-là deux minutes de silence.
