- The Comune (municipality) is the smallest autonomous political unit. It keeps the registers of births, marriages, and deaths and has the power to raise taxes and to approve public works. The Comune is run by the Giunta comunale (governing group) whose members come from the Consiglio comunale (city council). Both groups report to the Mayor (Sindaco).
