- There are a number of Palazzi in Rome whose names have become synonymous with the political institutions with which they are connected. Palazzo Chigi in Piazza Colonna was built in the 16th century and in 1919 was purchased by the state to be the seat of the Foreign Ministry. Since 1961 it has been the office of the Prime Minister and the place where the cabinet meets. Palazzo Madama was built by the Medici family in the 16th century and has been the seat of the Senate since 1871. Palazzo di Montecitorio has been the home of the Camera dei deputati (the lower house) since 1870. The Palazzo del Viminale , named after one of the Seven Hills of Rome, is the home of the Interior Ministry. The Palazzo del Quirinale , named after one of the famous Seven Hills of Rome, is the official residence of the Presidente della Repubblica .
