La guerra civile inglese (1642-1651) vide contrapposti i sostenitori del re Carlo I (Royalists o Cavaliers) e le forze parlamentari (Roundheads, perché portavano i capelli corti, in contrapposizione ai sostenitori del re, che portavano voluminose parrucche), capeggiate dal puritano Oliver Cromwell. Le cause che provocarono tale conflitto erano legate ai problemi religiosi ed economici dell'epoca. Fin dai tempi di Enrico VIII il parlamento aveva lottato per ottenere maggior potere di fronte al sovrano; il tentativo di Carlo I di farne arrestare i membri, che gli avevano negato i fondi necessari per continuare la sua politica assolutista, fu all'origine del conflitto militare. Sconfitto nelle battaglie di Marston Moor (1644) e Naseby (1645), il re si consegnò all'esercito scozzese un anno più tardi. Condannato a morte da una commissione parlamentare, fu giustiziato nel 1649. Durante gli anni del regime repubblicano (Commonwealth) che seguirono, Cromwell si mostrò intollerante tanto quanto il suo predecessore, sciolse il parlamento in più occasioni e governò come un dittatore. La monarchia fu restaurata nel 1660 con Carlo II, figlio di Carlo I.
