- Italy is subdivided into 20 regions, 5 of which have a special political autonomy. All of the regions have been given greater powers in the last few years, however, in preparation for Italy's reorganization on federal lines. Each region is subdivided in its turn into provinces and municipalities. The regions can pass laws. They also have administrative duties which can be delegated to the provinces and the municipalities. Each region is served by a council, a committee and a regional president.
