- This is the exam that students take at the end of the five years of secondary school, between the ages of 18 and 19. It consists of three written tests (one of which is Italian language) and an oral test. Marks (the maximum is 100 out of 100) depend on both the result of the tests and the average marks achieved over the last three years. The diploma is a requirement for university entry and, depending upon the type of secondary school attended, it can be in science, classics, arts, technology, etc.

- Italian students take the esame di maturità (school-leaving exam) at the end of the secondo ciclo d'istruzione (second-stage education, equivalent to the U.S. high school). They can attend a range of different high schools including liceo classico (specializing in Greek, Latin, and the humanities), liceo scientifico (specializing in sciences), liceo linguistico (specializing in modern languages), liceo artistico (specializing in art), istituto magistrale (for teacher training), and istituto tecnico e professionale (specializing in commercial or vocational subjects).
