- This is the period before Lent running from Twelfth Night to Ash Wednesday. It is celebrated with fancy dress parties, confetti, and streamers, especially during the weekend running from giovedì grasso (the last Thursday) to martedì grasso (Shrove Tuesday), which is the final day. The Venice carnival is very famous, with its open-air shows and fancy-dress balls, and so is the Viareggio carnival with its parade.

- Twelfth Night – a public holiday and religious festival celebrating the adoration of Jesus by the Magi. By popular tradition it is also the day when la Befana, an old woman on a broomstick, brings children gifts: they hang up their stockings the night before and in the morning find them full of sweets, cakes, and little presents or, if they have been naughty, coal (nowadays usually made of sugar).
