- This is the name given to the system of political power, often based on corruption and the illegal financing of parties, which collapsed in 1992-93 following the scandals which emerged from the Mani pulite inquiry, but also because of the fading of the ideological contrasts of the Cold War. The major government parties of the time, including in particular the Democrazia Cristiana (Christian Democrats) and the Partito Socialista (Socialist Party), were disbanded and new parties which are still active today took their place.

- The main Italian dailies are La Repubblica and Il Corriere della Sera. Other important daily newspapers are linked to particular cities, for example La Stampa (Turin), La Nazione (Florence), Il Messaggero (Rome), Il Mattino (Naples), while some are openly ideological, such as Il Manifesto (left-wing), L'Avvenire (Catholic) or Il Giornale (conservative). The daily financial paper is il Sole 24 ore. Italian daily papers have, for some years, published weekly colour supplements on travel, health, showbusiness, fashion, etc and offer “packages” with books, music CDs, DVDs or videos at a good price.
