- This term (which means “kick back city”) is widely used in the Italian media. It was first coined to describe Milan, where the judiciary had carried out an investigation into a series of episodes involving corruption, and was then extended to mean the whole system of illegal financing by the government parties which was uncovered in a famous inquiry in 1992-93.

- A corps of the Italian army, founded in 1814, with the tasks of guaranteeing the safety of citizens and their property and ensuring that State laws are observed. Because of their proverbial faithfulness to the State, the body is called the Fedelissima (ie the most faithful part of the armed forces). As well as being a military police force and responsible for public safety, the carabinieri also function as judiciary police. They are much more widespread throughout Italian territory (even having a presence in small villages) than the Police.
