Mayas
The Mayas, possibly of North American origin, settled in the Yucatán Peninsula around 2600 BC, and established a civilization which spread through Southern Mexico, into Guatemala, Belize, parts of Honduras and El Salvador, flourishing until the arrival of the Spanish in the sixteenth century. Their society was organized on the basis of city states grouped into confederations. Though lacking metal tools, the Mayas built stepped pyramids and other stone monuments such as those at Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Petén and Palenque.
Teotihuacán
A pre-Columbian city, the ruins of Teotihuacán lie northeast of Mexico City. The Nahuatl name means "city of the gods" or "where men became gods". Little is known about the city's founders or inhabitants, but it reached its peak between 300 and 600 AD. It includes the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, the temple of Quetzalcóatl, the Great Compound, and the central complex, the Ciudadela. The two main groups of buildings are linked by a road known as the Way of the Dead.
By 650 AD Teotihuacán was in decline; it was in ruins when the Aztecs found it in the fifteenth century.

maya
The mayas were an Indian race of people native to Central America (present-day Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras) with a civilisation that was highly advanced in many fields. The great number of ruins bears witness to this fact, such as the pyramids constructed from blocks of stone, numerous inscriptions and drawings, and not least the very accurate calendar that these people possessed.
