- Las antiguas grammar schools (que más o menos se corresponden con los institutos) fueron fundadas hace muchos siglos en Gran Bretaña para el estudio del latín. Hacia 1950 el alumno que quería acceder a esta escuela debía aprobar el eleven-plus examination. Pero solo un 20% del alumnado aprobaba este examen. El resto continuaba su intinerario educativo en una secondary modern school (escuela secundaria de grado inferior). Estos dos tipos de escuela fueron reorganizados durante los años 60 y 70 como comprehensive schools (escuelas integradas).
