- Gran Bretaña está dividida, con fines administrativos, en áreas. Las más grandes son los condados county y en Escocia, regiones region; ambos se dividen en districts. Los Parish Councils (Community Councils en Escocia y Gales) son las unidades más pequeñas de gobierno local. Todos son dirigidos por Councils que cuentan con poderes otorgados por el gobierno central. Están formados por representantes o councillors que son elegidos por los habitantes de la localidad. Sus responsabilidades incluyen la educación, los servicios sociales, la vivienda, el transporte, el medio ambiente, los servicios de la policía y de los bomberos, urbanismo, lugares de esparcimiento, bibliotecas y otros servicios locales.
