- El Royal Observatory (observatorio astronómico) de Greenwich fue construido en 1675 para obtener datos exactos sobre la posición de las estrellas con vista a la creación de cartas de navegación. El Greenwich meridian (meridiano de Greenwich) no se fijó oficialmente como el grado cero de longitud con validez universal hasta 1884.
