- Término peyorativo usado por los sureños durante la Guerra de Secesión para referirse a la gente de los estados norteños. Se usa hoy en todo el mundo para referirse a los estadounidenses en general. En los estados del sur aún se emplea en su sentido original, mientras que en los estados del norte suele aplicarse a los oriundos de Nueva Inglaterra.
