Das Forschungsvorhaben untersucht Szenarien der körperlichen Verwandlung in englischsprachiger fiktionaler Prosa von den 1550er Jahren bis zum frühen siebzehnten Jahrhundert, die sich in den ausgewählten Texten in drei paradigmatischen Denkfiguren manifestieren :
In der Transsubstantiation, der Verwandlung durch Verkleidung und der Idee der Transkulturation.
Dabei geht das Projekt von der Hypothese aus, dass sich eine Genealogie nachzeichnen lässt von der intensiven theologischen Eucharistiedebatte im Rahmen der Reformation, in deren Zentrum die Frage nach der Haltbarkeit der katholischen Lehre der Transsubstantiation stand, zu literarischen Szenarien der Verkleidung und der erwünschten oder drohenden Transformation von Körpern und Identitäten.
