Nach einer Laufbahn als freiberuflicher Journalist war er von 2004 bis 2007 „ Head of Development “ bei der Amsterdamer Produktionsfirma Pieter van Huystee Film angestellt.
Als Associate Producer diverser Dokumentarprojekte arbeitete er dort zusammen mit renommierten Filmemachern wie Heddy Honigmann , Peter Delpeut , Ramon Gieling und Mani Kaul .
2007 wechselte Knol zum Internationalen Dokumentarfilmfestival Amsterdam (IDFA), wo er den Co-Produktionsmarkt mitverantwortete und das Trainingsprogramm IDFAcademy leitete.
