Dort entwickelte er großes Interesse an der Biologie und wurde Co-Autor eines wichtigen wissenschaftlichen Artikels der Mutagenese.
Im Jahr 1937 zog er in die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika und konzentrierte sich auf die Molekulargenetik.

Nach chemischer Mutagenese des Stamms wurde die Population analysiert. Im Ergebnis zeigten drei Stämme eine zum Parentalstamm signifikant erhöhte Butanolproduktion.
Somit konnte die Eignung eines Hochdurchsatz-Screenings bestätigt werden, welches neue Perspektiven für das kombinatorische Metabolic Engineering solventogener Clostridien eröffnet.
