In the vineyards of the Valais, small-scale habitat use during foraging and large-scale distribution of territories in relation to vegetation structure were examined.
The investigations show that the woodlark prefers vineyards with sparse vegetation cover and high plant species richness.
Ideally, vegetation cover ranges from 40 to 60 %; that is, in the vineyards neither completely bare ground nor a dense vegetation cover is optimal.

In 2005 and 2011, Master theses at the University of Bern addressed habitat use and breeding success of the woodlark in the vineyards of the Valais.
Since 2007, a conservation programme for the woodlark is running in the Parc Régional Chasseral, in co-operation with the Parc managers, Le Foyard ( private environmental protection office ), the Swiss Association for the Protection of Birds SVS / BirdLife Switzerland and the canton of Bern.
