In 1996 he became Associate Professor, and from 1998 Full Professor at the Institute for Communication Science and Media Research at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich.
From 1998 to 2002 he was president of the German Communication Association (Deutschen Gesellschaft für Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft).
From 1995 to 2004 he was director of the Medien Institut Ludwigshafen, a company for applied media studies.
