Der Name kommt von ‘ Fajã ’ ( port. für eine Erdansammlung am Fuß einer Klippe, die einen Strand formt ) und ‘ Padres ’ ( port. für Priester, da dieses Land damals Priestern des Jesuitenordens gehörte ).
Dieses Land, das von einer kleinen Bucht geschützt wird, produziert den besten Madeirawein der Sorte ‘Malmsey’ und war bis 1998 nur vom Meer aus zugänglich.
Heute gibt es dort einen modernen, gläsernen Panoramalift, mit 350 m der höchste in Europa, was diesen idyllischen Ort, vielleicht das letzte, kleine Paradies auf Madeira, leichter erreichbar macht.
