Über die Ursache dieses Artenreichtums werde bisher aber nur spekuliert, berichten Kiel und Nielsen in der aktuellen Ausgabe der renommierten Fachzeitschrift Geology:
"Die gängigen Meinungen sind, dass entweder die Region um Chile ein ' Museum der Artenvielfalt ' ist, in dem alte Arten über Jahrmillionen überdauerten während neue hinzukamen, oder dass antarktische Arten die Fjordlandschaft von Süden her besiedelten."

The reasons for this diversity were so far speculative, report Kiel and Nielsen in the current issue of the scientific journal Geology:
