Through copious fieldwork by the Viennese ethnologist and curator Hanns Peteer (1931–1993) from 1969 to 1992, the museum’s holdings on New Guinea and Australia were again significantly expanded.
The Australia collection contains 860 objects altogether, including many different forms of throwing sticks and boomerangs, spear throwers, shields, clubs, carrying vessels, clapsticks and didgeridoos as well as contemporary bark paintings and dot paintings.

Die Australien-Sammlung umfasst insgesamt 860 Gegenstände, u. a. viele unterschiedlich gestaltete Formen von Wurfhölzern und Bumerangs, Speerschleudern, Schilde, Keulen, Traggefäße, Klangstäbe und Didgeridoos sowie zeitgenössische Rindenmalereien und Dotpaintings.
