The catastrophe developed further into a fire of nitrophoska and fertilizers storehouses polluting the atmosphere with products of their decomposition: nitrous oxide, chlorine gas, etc.
Other features associated with the canal include a former hotel building, a storehouse (both now private residences), and the remains of one of the locks.
