In 1863 the physiologist Hermann Helmholtz published a treatise on the scientific principles of music that not only laid a cornerstone for systematic musicology, but also propagated a technogenous understanding of music based on objective measuring instruments.

On just under 600 pages interspersed with tables, graphs, and mathematical formulas, he formulated the first physical-physiological theory on the principles of music and its perception.

"

If this is true, the quiet tones which begin and end For Bunita Marcus ( 1985 ) and Palais de Mari ( 1986 ) are everything and nothing.

But with this statement from the legendary ?Middleburg Lecture?, held July 2, 1985 in the eponymous Dutch city for a number of musicology students some two years before the composer?s death, which we will cite later as well, Feldman means something slightly different.

In fact, these few words of the Jewish-American composer reveal the innermost secret of his late period, which began in 1984 and which includes the works For Bunita Marcus and Palais de Mari (both were written for the composer BunitaMarcus (born 1952), with whom Feldman had a close friendship).

By means of digressions into the history of the work ’s reception by musicians, music scholars, and composers Helmholtz Musicus shows how concepts and definitions from the laboratory swiftly spread into the everyday world.

By the end of the nineteenth century Helmholtz’s objective methods and acoustic concepts already formed the framework in which the still young field of musicology investigated the theory, history, aesthetics, and perception of music.

But also outside the scholarly world Helmholtz’s acoustical view of music shaped the manner in which music was perceived and performed – not least of all through the technical materialization of his concepts in the telephone and phonograph.

He made the acquaintance of his well-travelled contemporary Johann Gottfried Herder, older by just a few years, who collected the poetic writings of European population groups and called them “ folk songs ”.

His concern was neither ethnography, nor philology, nor musicology.

The poets of the Sturm and Drang era left behind the meaningless opulence of the Rococo palaces (and the “pastoral idylls” staged in the palace theatres) to travel through the villages and take a stand against the rigid, stifling conventions of the times.
