Millions of works have been produced within a short period of time – but how many of them are remembered ?
In many cases, there is just one photo left that attests to an actor’s glamorous performance, yet sometimes entire stories can be reconstructed with the help of series of film stills.
The acquisition of an important photo collection in January 2008 – which was made possible with the financial support of the Ministry for Science, Research, and Culture – enabled Filmmuseum Potsdam to do this.

Oft ist es nur noch ein Foto, das als letztes Zeugnis vom glanzvollen Auftritt des Schauspielers kündet, doch manchmal lassen sich ganze Geschichten durch Serien von Standfotos rekonstruieren.
Der Ankauf einer bedeutenden Fotosammlung im Januar 2008 – dank finanzieller Unterstützung durch das Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kultur – hat das Filmmuseum in diese glückliche Lage gebracht.

NOW! is a film montage of stills depicting the discrimination against blacks in the United States, rhythmically cut after the song with the same name.
The exhibition asks it ´ s relevance today, in a digital era in which images and sound have become ever more mobile, ripping, remix and collective production have become common tools of communication.

Der Fokus liegt auf dem Film NOW! des kubanischen Regisseurs Santiago Álvarez aus dem Jahr 1965, ein aus Standfotos zusammengesetzter Montagefilm über die Diskriminierung der Schwarzen in den USA, rhythmisch geschnitten nach dem gleichnamigen Lied.
Die Ausstellung stellt die Frage nach der heutigen Relevanz des Films im digitalen Zeitalter, in dem Bilder und Töne immer mobiler und Aneignung und Piraterie alltägliche Mittel der Kommunikation sind.

Among the most spectacular works are 49 film stills from Friedrich Murnau’s “Four Devils” (1928), a film that is thought to be lost.
Moreover, the collection comprises photos by Richard Oswald, Karl Grune, Georg Wilhelm Pabst, Mauritz Stiller, René Clair, or Edward Sedgwick as well as pictures taken during the Neubabelsberg studio period.

Zu den spektakulärsten Stücken gehören 49 Standfotos des als verschollen geltenden Films „Four Devils“ (1928) von Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau.
Arbeiten von Richard Oswald sind ebenso vertreten wie von Karl Grune, Georg Wilhelm Pabst, Mauritz Stiller, René Clair oder Edward Sedgwick.
